The Beginning: 15,000 - 600 B.C.E.

Unit 1

This unit deals with BIG questions: How did we get here? Where did life start? How did the earth get populated? How and why did civilization develop?

This unit is your summer homework. In order to be prepared for class in September, you should have read chapters 1-6 of the textbook, and completed the reading guides for each chapter. You complete them by identifying the vocabulary (not just a definition of the term, but WHY it is important or relevant), and answering the questions for understanding. They can be downloaded below. Reading guides for Chapters 1-6 should be completed and ready to turn in on Tuesday, September 6, 2016. We will take the Unit 1 test at the end of the first week. It's going to go fast, so be ready!

All the resources you'll need for this unit are here...to help your understanding, I have included my power point presentations for chapters 1-6, followed by the Reading Guides (assignments) for each chapter.

Additional information

This section will contain any and all additional materials for the class: primary source documents, video clips, links to cool things I think you should check out. So, look here often to see if there's something you're missing out on.

To Read (Primary Sources and Pearls of Wisdom):

Hammurabi's Code
Epic of Gilgamesh
Hymn to the Nile
Additional Ancient Civilization Documents

To Search (the web):

Big History Project thresholds 6 & 7
Patterns of Subsistence - Pastoralism
The Plow and the Now
Noble or Savage?
Worst Mistake in Human History?

To Watch (videos):

The first video is a TED Talk with noted historian David Christian. He sums up the history of the world in 18 minutes. Mind-blowing and insanely cool. Next, we move to  some video clips starring John Green, the man who brought you the book and movie "The Fault in our Stars". He hosts a pretty cool YouTube series called Crash Course: World History. We'll become very familiar with him over the course of the year. Here are some clips related to unit 1 to get you started.
