Today we're wrapping up looking at Psychoanalytic theories of personality. Hopefully, you read about Freud's theories regarding the conscious and the sub/unconscious, his belief that the sub/unconscious determines most of our behavior, and that the personality is regulated by the interaction between the Id (self-centered, childlike part of our personality), Superego (highly moral part of our personality that tries to keep us on the straight and narrow), and the Ego (reality-based part of our personality that balances the desires of the Id with the moral restrictions of the Superego and comes up with a workable solution to the problem). Suppose you have a test on a Friday, but your friends want to go out on Thursday night. The Id in your personality might say something like "go on...go out! You'll never have this chance to go out with all of your friends again!", and the Superego part of your personality may say "It's better to stay home and study and get a good night's sleep so you can take your test tomorrow and do well." Your Ego will try to balance them out and say "Well, I can go out with my friends until 9:30, then come home and study and get a good night's sleep and do well tomorrow", or it can say "I could study after dinner and meet my friends and stay out until 11:00, then come home and get some sleep". As long as you do what your Ego comes up with, things are cool. But if the ID or Superego feel that they are getting the short end of the deal, damage to the personality can result, necessitating the defense mechanisms mentioned in the text.

Song of the day
Today we have a song from a band I met when one of the summers I performed on the Warped Tour. They are all from Los Angeles, and I was impressed with how they were able to blend a lot of different influences like traditional Latino music with funk, soul, and rap. Here's the band Ozomatli with one of their best jams, Cut Chemist Suite.
